GORILLAS
Gorillas are divided into two species, each with subspecies.

The classification of the gorilla is as follows:

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
   Subphylum: Vertebrata
Class: Mammalia
Order: Primatia
   Suborder: Haplorhini
Family: Hominidae
   Subfamily: Homininae
Genus: Gorilla (Geoffroy, 1852)

Although all of the gorilla species are listed as endangered, the most numerous species is the Western Gorilla with aprox. 80-100 thousand individuals. Eastern gorillas are less populous, with around 16,000 animals. Only 700 Mountain gorillas and 300 Cross River gorillas survive in the wild.

Dian Fossey studied mountain gorillas, which are only found in two locations: the Virunga Mountains along the borders of Rwanda, Uganda, and Congo; and in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda.
