GORILLAS
Gorillas are divided into two species, each with subspecies.
- Western Gorillas (Gorilla gorilla)
- Western Lowland Gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla)
- Cross River Gorilla (Gorilla gorilla diehli)
- Eastern Gorillas (Gorilla beringei)
- Mountain Gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei)
- Eastern Lowland Gorilla (Gorilla beringei graueri)

Although all of the gorilla species are listed as endangered, the most numerous species is the Western Gorilla with aprox. 80-100 thousand individuals. Eastern gorillas are less populous, with around 16,000 animals. Only 700 Mountain gorillas and 300 Cross River gorillas survive in the wild.
Dian Fossey studied mountain gorillas, which are only found in two locations: the Virunga Mountains along the borders of Rwanda, Uganda, and Congo; and in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda.
