A quick guide to the classic fantasy story about the lands of middle-earth, written by J.R.R. Tolkien.

The hero and main character of LOTR is a hobbit named Frodo Baggins, played by no other than Elijah Wood. He is set on a perilous and important quest of destroying the One Ring (that was found by his relative and friend Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit). This was the ring that was forged by Lord Sauron and has the power to turn everything into evil. In the possession of Sauron, it would bring ruin unto the world. A fellowship of nine must destroy the ring and Frodo appoints himself the ring bearer, the one who will carry the ring into Mordor and destroy it in Mt. Doom, where the ring was made, before Sauron can reclaim. Armed only with his sword Sting and a coat of mithril, Frodo sets out on his quest along with the Fellowship of the Ring:

Gandalf the Grey/White - a Wizard of the White Council, helps the fellowship through his wisdom and power. Has the sword Glamdring, the Foehammer. Also called Mithrandir.

Aragorn aka Strider - a Dunedain ranger who is the heir of Isildur and must reclaim his throne of Gondor. He goes by many names including Estel, Elessar, and Elfstone; he had the broken sword that was reforged into Anduril. Fell in love with the elf maiden Arwen, daughter of Elrond.

Merry (Meriadoc Brandybuck) - a friend of Frodo, a hobbit. Merry becomes the esquire of King Theoden of Rohan.

Pippin (Peregrin Took) - also a friend and a hobbit, the youngest in the fellowship. Pippin becomes a guardsman for Minas Tirith in Gondor.

Sam (Samwise Gamgee) - the very loyal and trustworthy servant of Frodo who is always by Frodo's side.

Legolas Greenleaf - an elven prince of Mirkwood who befriends the dwarf Gimli, he is very skillful with his bow and arrows.

Gimli - Gloin's son, a dwarf from the lonely mountain, he is the only dwarf who befriends an elf (Legolas) and is admitted into Lorien where he is mesmerized by Lady Galadriel's beauty. His weapon is the axe.

Boromir - son of Lord Denethor of Gondor, he was sent to bring aid to his land.

The fellowship goes through many adventures and dangers in strange lands but find themselves with aid and also many enemies.
